A mother mouse and her babies are out for some food-foraging in the backyard of the house where they live one day. And while she is instructing them about the best ways to find their food, the house cat comes along and narrows his gaze on the little family, licking his whiskers in anticipation.
Suddenly, the mother mouse steps right out in front of the children and begins to bark like a dog: “Woof! Woof!”
At this surprising turn of events, the house cat looks startled, and backs away.
“Woof! Woof! Woof!” The brave little mouse roars.
Confused, the cat turns tail and runs away. At this, the mother mouse turns to her tiny charges and says:
“You see? This is why I have told you how important it is to learn a second language!”

Oh, I hope they do get the lesson – it’s very powerful (as in Mama Mouse) to have more than one language. It makes us more adaptable and opens our mind to see the world in different ways from our own culture. Sadly, we Americans, except for the one son the borders or who have traveled, don’t realize it. It comes from our ancestors coming to America. They tried to fit in so they often didn’t teach their mother language to their kids. Survival thing at the time- but now new strategies are needed, I think.

You hit the nail on the nail. In Switzerland, most citizens can speak at least four international languages. Yes, they share their borders with a lot of countries but not all countries who share borders with other countries can speak each other’s language. I think this why the Swiss are one of the most diplomatic people on earth. Many Americans like you rightly said, thinks the whole world revolves around the States.

Yes, I love my country. But I think we’re distracted by superficial things and I’m afraid that it has numbed many people of critical thinking or even wisdom. It’s like we’ve lulled ourselves to sleep. It worries me, honestly.

Ummm…One remember the America that the colonists fought England for and the values they stood for. I think the change can only start with us, our personal value system and then the family..which is sadly…disintegrating…
